For the first time ever, Christabel will be hosting HoopGirl teacher training workshops on the East Coast. In addition, her live trainings have been drastically cut down for 2008. By 2009, most of the HoopGirl teacher training programs will be distance learning packages. In other words, this is the first time (and quite possibly the last time) you'll have an opportunity to train with Christabel in person, on the East Coast.

The 3-day event will take place June 20-22 in St. Petersburg, Florida at the Roberts Recreation Center (located at 1246 50th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL 33703). For those unfamiliar, St. Pete is located just outside of Tampa. And if you can't make the Tampa training, here is the full 08 calendar for Level 1 Teacher Training:

May 30-Jun 1 Santa Barbara

June 20-22 Tampa, FL

July 30-Aug 1 Birmingham, UK

Sept 12-14 San Francisco, CA

Oct 10-12 Louiseville, KY

BACKGROUND:
The program is spread over three days, for a total of 24 hours of hoopdance instructor training. It's intended for those seeking a career as entrepreneurs teaching hooping as a mind-body, athletic dance form. Teaching is taught as a transformational practice of personal growth and empowerment. Graduates have the option to license as official HoopGirlWorkout™. In other words, this is an awesome opportunity for you to become certified and spread the hoop love in your own city by teaching hooping classes.

So, if you have wanted to become a certified HoopGirl instructor, now is your chance! Check out hoopgirl.com for more information and for registration details. Be sure to click on the 'Teacher Training' tab and then 'Certified Hoop Dance Program' to register.

If you decide on the Tampa/ St. Pete area training and have any questions about where to stay, what to do, etc., just let me know. I would be happy to provide you with recommendations.

Would anyone like to buy my ticket (for $44.28) to the awesome Richmond Hoop Path workshop?

Boo hoo! I just realized that the workshop will take place the same day I promised to go to NYC to model for a friend's fashion show.

Details:
We are thrilled to announce that Baxter and Ann from The Hoop Path are coming to Richmond to amaze and enlighten us with a 3 hour Hoop Workshop!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
This workshop will introduce you to the physical challenge and meditative bliss of hoopdance: the energetic flow art of dancing with the sacred circle, the hoop. Hooping can be an exercise, a dance, a meditation. On the Hoop Path, we approach our hoop Practice with shared intentions not only to improve our hooping skill, but also to develop the skills to go Within, as we believe that Inner and Outer strength are inextricably and intimately intertwined. The introductory workshop will be divided into two sections, both taught by master teacher and Hoop Path founder Jonathan Baxter. Together we will focus on building core hooping skills, introducing students to Hoop Path terms such as pe*A*ce, Ritmo, One Tree/Two Tree Hooping, and Two Birds. Depending on where we find our rhythm as a group, we may well get into some of the more physically challenging techniques like Reversing, Breaking, Paddling, Lifts, and Angle Hooping.

About The Hoop Path:

Jonathan Baxter picked up a hoop for the first time six years ago, thinking it would help him rehabilitate some injured shoulder muscles. He never dreamed it would develop into a daily meditation that totally transformed him, inside and out. Over the years he has logged in thousands and thousands of hooping hours--what we on the Hoop Path call "flight time." Baxter's commitment to his Practice has revealed to him many of the profound subtleties to be found this ecstatic movement. This extensive and direct involvement with "hoopgnosis," coupled with Baxter's unique gifts as a storyteller and guide, make him an extraordinary teacher.

**NOTE: This workshop will be a BYOH (bring your own hoop) event. However, if you are new to hooping and don't have a hoop, no worries..... FireFlyGirl will bring a few extras.

HUGE THANKS TO GALLERY 5 FOR LETTING US HOST THIS WORKSHOP IN YOUR BEAUTIFUL SPACE ------- WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!

Friends, hoopers, countrymen.
This is your chance to play a role in making Hoop History!

Starting February 2, I will be conducting an 8-week pilot study called "Efficacy of Selected Exercises on Hula Hoop Performance". As a certified personal fitness trainer and avid hooper, I want to investigate which movements have direct carryover into improvement of hoop performance.

This is the first study of its kind. It will be invaluable in helping the hoop community as a whole to understand our art form more fully, and take our skills to the next level. Established art forms and sports like ballet and football have all gone through this stage of trial-and-error during their development to discover what REALLY works where the rubber meets the road. Now is our time to figure out exactly what it takes to step up our game and take it to the next level, beyond the obvious "practice makes perfect".

I plan to publish the results in a few hoop and fitness websites and
publications, as well as use them to develop a hoop-specific workout
routine.

This is not for money, it's a labor of love.

REQUIREMENTS:
- You must be in New York City from Feb 2 - March 29, or be able to
come here at least three times during the length of the study to record
your hoop progress
- You must be a regular hooper with at least 1 year experience
- You must be able to commit to performing one exercise in a prescribed
manner on your own, 3 times per week, for 8 consecutive weeks starting Feb 2
(no special equipment will be required)
- You must agree to stick with whatever hoop AND exercise routine you've been doing,
for the entire 8 weeks. In other words, if you now hoop twice a week, do yoga once,
and lift weights once, you need to stick with that exact routine for the whole 8 weeks,
without changing it. This is the only way to isolate the potential variables.

Really, it's almost no work on your part, and you help make a great contribution
to the progression of our craft.

I'd love to get at least 100 study participants by Feb. 2.
Please email me at hoopstudy@gmail.com to participate!

Be awesome,
Ted Brancu

We had such a good time last year, that we hope that this notice comes early enough that all who would like to come, can make it.

The 2nd Annual National Hoop Path Retreat dates are now set for June 26- June 29th, 2008. We decided to bump up the dates from July so that we do not conflict with Transformus, or the heat of July's southern Sun.

We will follow the same schedule as last year, but will offer an additional beginner set of workshops (three day intensive) immediately preceding the Intermediate/Advanced Workshops each of the three days.

We will provide you with all the details and the full schedule very soon.
If you're too curious to wait, here are some links to last year's event. These are just to give everyone and idea of what this event is like. Please keep in mind that these posts are about last year's retreat.

Even though I am new to town and don't know many of you yet. I would potentially be willing to be the coordinator of this project.

I have found a private gym that i am going to join by my house which has a really beautiful group fitness space that I will likely mostly be practing in. However, I am interested in manifesting a regular opportunity for hoopers in DC to come together as a community and learn and dance together.

Ideal location would include the following characteristics
- Less than $20 per hour
-Large space that could accomodate 10-20 hoop dancers
- Hard wood or concrete flooring
-Mirrors
In my limited time here, I don't get the sense that our community could support a weekly practice session. Perhaps we could shoot for bi-monthly or monthly.

I am eager to learn if you have done this in the past and what you learned from that experience?

If the weather is cooperative (i.e., no rain, temp. above 60 degrees), I will plop down my pile o' hoops on the "patio" side of the Jefferson Memorial (that is, the side facing the water and the sunshine in late afternoon) at 3:30 on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 30. Because of the proximity of the water, I probably won't be bringing a lot of extra hoops for beginners, lest my hoops end up as fish food. Bring cameras and get your Burner funkwear on! This will be a nice place for photos, especially later in the afternoon (and tourists will probably snap some of us, too).
Also, if I'm not mistaken, the Guerilla Poets are going to be drumming on Monday evening (Oct. 1) in Dupont Circle. They have issued a standing invitation to us hoopers/poisters/troublemakers to come groove to their beats. Contact me if you need more info.

We have a group in SF that meets every Sunday in parks around town - if there is enough hoopers, it might be a go. I imagine many will be at the Burn (alas) but it you need some pre-burn practice.

The price was very reasonnable and once again, it IS the most beautiful hoop I own! (Plus she's very friendly!)

SO, I just felt like sharing my experience; if you need a hoop check out www.missjoule.com or contact Talia on the tribe :-)

Hello Hoopers and their loved ones/friends/hangers on!

Here is the Hoopers for Peace info if you want to join us on Saturday to protest the war in Iraq IN STYLE!

Unfortunately, my t-shirt designs weren't done in time to have decent screen printing costs, so I'm going to revert to just making my own ghetto "Hoopers for Peace" t-shirt and suggesting that anyone else who wants to do the same.

I live in Takoma Park (a neighborhood in DC that spans into MD), right next to the Takoma Park metro stop (on the red line). I invite any of you to meet at my apt. at 10 am on Sat. morning. Because my apt. is on the very edge of the District, there should be ample (free) street parking around here for people coming in from out of town. We can mill around here--I'll have coffee and muffins for whoever wants them--and head out via metro around 10:20 or 10:30 to get us down to the Mall around 11 am. I propose that we meet up on 4th street on the eastern end of the National Gallery of Art - West Building (in other words, btwn. the two galleries). I think there is a Louvre-style pyramid on that end that will provide a good landmark. I've marked the location I'm thinking of with a red x on the map I got off of United for Peace's Web site and I'm attaching it here. If you can't meet that early, then call my cell to find out where we are.

On that note, I am going to dress Burner-esque funky hoopalicious style for this event. It'll help attract attention to our group and heck, it's just fun. Feel free to do the same. We may have a videographer (or two) with us, so I'm aiming for a memorable YouTube appearance.

Also, if you guys have them and are willing, I recommend you bring some little kids' hoops (like from Target/Wal-Mart). I always get swarmed by pesky ankle-biters who think they can use adult-sized hoops. :-) I will have one extra adult-size hoop with me, as well, for anyone who wants to use it.

I'll give out my cell phone number and address to anyone who contacts me (via Tribe or email: sarahlovering@hotmail.com) to meet up with us.

Also, I'm not sure what your plans are for Sat. evening and Sunday, but if you guys stick around that night after the protest, you should come check out the art show - FLUX - that me and my fire arts troupe, Capital Fire Arts, are performing in. I'll paste the info for that below. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and not freeze us, since we're performing outdoors.

(In sum, they kicked us off the property, saying that what we were doing was dangerous. They threatened to call the police and report us for trespassing if we didn't leave immediately.)

So, in response to that ridiculous situation, I had this idea:

What if we got together like 20 or 30 hoopers to go down to the mall and hoop in one long fuckin' line from the east end of the mall all the way down to the west end? You really think the police would come and try to arrest us all? The shoppers would love it and the police and mgmt would look like total grinches if they made us stop. Especially if we all looked super cute... Who's in?

United for Peace (and however many other groups) are coordinating another march in DC on January 27th. I'll be coming down from north Jersey with a Peace Action group, I'm the only hooper in the group, and if there's a chance to break from the general march and meet up with some hoopers, that would be so amazingly awesome.

The march route is said to be starting around the east end of the National Mall, and then going around the Capitol. Tentative times: assemble - 11am to 1pm; march step-off - 1pm; end of march - 4pm. Otherwise, general info here: http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=3468
Hey All-

Just to let you know I plan to hoop up at Meridian Hill Park/Malcolm X Park in Adams Morgan on Sundays. It isn't a real meet up or anything but if you have free time I am usually up there around 5:30 or 6:00. There is a drum circle and african dance jam that usually takes place and I find it to be a perfect setting to hoop. There are lots of people around with a real community setting so if you are in the area feel free to stop by and say hello, it is located on 16th Street just North of U Street. I hoop a little ways from the drummers to keep my space so just look around the grass areas. Hope to see some of you up there from time to time. It was wonderful to see Steph and Kurt last week! Peace.

Hey all, let's initiate critical mass hula hooping during the major protest against the war during summit meetings of the IMF/World Bank in DC on September 24th!! I don't think I need to tell you why this would be such a relevant and powerful statement....

Lots of people are meeting at the Washington Memorial at 11am on that Saturday for a massive march and concert. Perhaps we could meet up in this area. There are other protests/happenings happening all over the city Sept. 23-26th. Here's a website with lots of info.: www.septemberaction.org
and
dc.indymedia.org
is a good source of alternative media coverage and event info.

Please make suggestions for how to organize this (it seems like if we have a place and time to meet, and individuals have affinity groups/friends/family (plan ahead for problems that may be encountered) to look out for each other, this can be pretty simple to organize)!! My thought is since many of us know how to make our own hoops, not only can we bring our own hoops, but we can make some to bring along and pass out (It ends up costing me roughly $17 to make 10 basic hoops). Maybe if you don't know how to make hoops, you could donate the cost of supplies to someone who does...

I realize this is somewhat last minute, but let's start talking and get this happening!!!
